Fascinating fascia - a little-known secret

Written by Chiropractor Joanna Callaghan

We all feel stiff from time to time (some of us more than others), but could it be due to something else other than your muscles?

Around all your groups of muscles you have a special layer of tissue called fascia. This forms structural trains that connect large areas of your body.

You may have heard of plantar fasciitis for example (inflammation at the fascia on the sole of your foot). In actual fact you can get fascial tightness and irritation anywhere in your body and it is involved in a variety of conditions (frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel syndrome, hernias).

Just like a kink in the chain, any points of tension may cause reciprocal tension elsewhere in the body.

Try this quick tip:

  1. Find a clear area of the house and try reaching forward towards your toes. Can’t quite reach?

  2. Take a tennis ball and roll out the bottom of your feet for 30 seconds each side.

  3. Now try reaching for your toes again. Easier?

Fascia really is fascinating, and if you think you may have fascia related pain or restriction, feel free to reach out to us as it’s something we can help with!
